Windy Day Cultural Appropriation Issue
When the song “Windy Day'' was released, because of its use of the Phrygian dominant scale, it reminded the K-fans of Aladdin — which they falsely associated with India and consecutively, curry. Again, since Oh My Girl is a Nugu group (Basically means “Nobody”), the company used this opportunity to make the girls known as they were doing less well compared to other girl groups. Not only that, but the company is also going through a period of bankruptcy
NOTE: Oh My Girl isn’t the only group that performed Norazo’s “Curry Song” yet the hate they're getting is excessive and unnecessary. Also if you look closely at Norazo’s apology, they emphasized that they did not mean to mock Indians with that song, and they were just misinformed/ignorant about their culture or religion. If so, to idols like Oh My Girl who had performed it, was their intention to be racist? A new accusation is coming out claiming that the girls called themselves Curry-dols (Curry Idols). That is simply false. Here’s why:
Though these may be uncomfortable to see, it really shows that it’s really the fans who gave them that nickname. This is not the only incident where they were asked to do Indian dances or poses, because in other shows they were asked by hosts/fans to do it also. Does this automatically make them racists? We don’t think so... Things such as these tend to happen in societies that are not yet culturally aware enough. Koreans didn’t know that this would be disrespectful and offensive to Indians since Cultural Appropriation is a fairly new concept, but as Kpop is becoming more known around the world, they’re slowly learning. Still an apology from Oh My Girl is really needed which WM is still ignoring, as it’s wrong and hurtful to Indians.
NOTE: Oh My Girl refers to their fans as “Keurie-deul (크리들),” which was shortened from MIRACLE (미라클). If you know Korean, the deul (들) at the end lets you know that the word is plural. As a result, the K-fans used the shortened term to attach it to the girls’ name; hence the name Curry-dols (Curry Idols). Luckily, K-fans don’t call them that anymore ever since the Curry Song issue blew up. We felt like this should be addressed because many people have misunderstood the girls whenever they say “Keuriedeul.” They think that it’s referring to the nickname given by their fans during the Windy Day era, when in reality it’s far from that.
